Tonbridge is a market town in the County of Kent which is
located four miles North of Royal Tunbridge Wells and is within the Borough of
Tonbridge and Malling. Prior to 1870 Tonbridge was spelt “Tun-Bridge” and was
changed at this time by the GPO due to the confusion with Royal Tunbridge
Wells.
Tonbridge has an 11th Century castle
built by Richard Fitz Gilbert who was
half brother of William the Conqueror and was responsible for governing England
in William 1st many absences.
Royal Tunbridge Wells came into being as a Spa town and Tourist resort due to the spring attracting many visitors to take the waters. The title Royal was granted by King Edward V11 as the town was popular for many years amongst members of the royal family. Royal Tunbridge wells is one of only three towns in England to have been granted this. The others Being Royal Leamington Spa and Royal Wootton Bassett.
